Leading UK HVAC Equipment Provider Improves Packaging Performance with 800mm MultiPocket Material

A leading UK HVAC equipment provider improved product protection, packing efficiency and material flexibility by installing a Cirrus packaging machine with a winder and switching to Green Line 800mm Multi-Pocket material.

The new solution gives operators a wide, flexible cushioning material that can be used for wrapping, cushioning and void filling, while retaining more usable width after inflation than the customer’s previous material.

The Customer

The customer is a leading UK provider of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment. Its warehouse handles products with varied dimensions, including larger and wider items that require effective wrapping and cushioning before distribution.

The company has not been named in this case study at its request.

The Challenge

The customer was previously using nominally 800mm-wide inflatable protective packaging material from another supplier. Although the uninflated material provided the required width, it contracted considerably during inflation, reducing the coverage available to operators.

The business wanted more than a wider finished material. It required a versatile protective packaging solution that could wrap and cushion products effectively, fill empty space within cartons and simplify packing across a varied product range.

The project focused on:

  • Improving product protection during storage, handling and transport.
  • Providing wrapping, cushioning and void filling from one material.
  • Retaining more usable width after inflation.
  • Improving coverage across larger HVAC products.
  • Reducing material handling and unnecessary repositioning.
  • Supporting the company’s sustainability goals.
  • Creating a reliable and straightforward packaging process.

The Severn Packaging Solution

Severn Packaging reviewed the customer’s products and existing packing process before demonstrating a Cirrus inflatable packaging machine with a winder and Green Line 800mm MultiPocket material.

A Versatile MultiPocket Material

Green Line 800mm MultiPocket is a hybrid protective material designed for wrapping, cushioning and void filling. Its connected pocket structure creates a flexible protective layer that can be wrapped around products, used between components or placed within cartons to restrict movement.

This gives the warehouse one adaptable material for different products and carton configurations, helping operators select the right amount of protection without changing between separate wrapping and void-fill materials.

Better Coverage After Inflation

The demonstration also showed that the Severn Packaging material retained significantly more of its nominal 800mm width after inflation than the customer’s previous material.

The greater usable surface helps operators cover larger products more effectively in a single pass, reducing the need to reposition the material or combine multiple sections.

Cirrus Machine with Winder

The Cirrus machine inflates the Multi-Pocket material consistently before the winder collects it into manageable rolls.

Operators can prepare material in advance and move the finished rolls to the required packing area. This creates a flexible workflow and ensures protective material is readily available when needed.

Clear Sustainability Messaging

The Green Line material is visibly green and carries clear environmental messaging. This helps the customer communicate its packaging choices to recipients while supporting its wider sustainability goals.

The Results

Improved Product Protection

The inflated pocket structure creates a flexible cushioning layer around the customer’s HVAC products, helping protect them throughout handling, storage and distribution.

One Material for Multiple Applications

Multi-Pocket can be used for wrapping, cushioning and void filling, giving the warehouse a versatile material for a varied product range and different carton configurations.

Improved Coverage for Larger Products

By retaining more of its nominal width after inflation, the 800mm Multi-Pocket provides better coverage across the customer’s larger and wider HVAC products.

Increased Packing Efficiency

Operators can achieve effective protection with fewer material sections and less repositioning, simplifying the packing process and reducing handling time.

Improved Material Handling

The winder produces manageable rolls of inflated material that can be prepared in advance and positioned where required within the packing operation.

Support for Sustainability Goals

The material’s green appearance and clearly visible environmental messaging help demonstrate the customer’s commitment to more sustainable packaging choices.

Key Project Benefits

  • Flexible wrapping, cushioning and void-fill performance.
  • Improved protection during handling and distribution.

Customer Comment

“The 800mm Multi-Pocket gives us a much more versatile protective packaging solution. We can use the same material to wrap and cushion our products or fill space within the carton, and it provides noticeably better coverage than our previous material. The Cirrus machine and winder have integrated well into our operation, while the material’s clear environmental messaging also supports our sustainability goals.”

Severn Packaging Comment

“This project was about selecting a material that performed well across the complete packing application. Multi-Pocket gives the customer a flexible combination of wrapping, cushioning and void filling, while retaining more usable width after inflation for larger HVAC products. Combined with the Cirrus machine and winder, it provides an efficient protective packaging solution that is straightforward for operators to prepare and use.”

Protective Packaging Selected Around the Application

Effective inflatable packaging depends on more than its nominal dimensions. The material must provide the right combination of cushioning, flexibility, usable coverage and handling efficiency for the products being packed.

Severn Packaging tests materials against customers’ actual products and packing processes, helping businesses select a complete protective packaging solution rather than judging performance on material width alone.
